Views of students in the workshop
*Classes are at a converted Blacksmiths Forge in Brantham, Suffolk. It can accommodate up to four students. Daytime and evening classes available. Apply now before they fill up. Daytime classes are from 10.30am until 4pm with an hour for lunch. (places to eat nearby) Evening classes are from 7pm to 9pm. Monday and Tuesday Prices: 6 daytime classes cost £175.00. 6 evening classes cost £84.00 Individual tuition £25.00 per hour by arrangement. Individual tuition also available please ask for availability. Your tutor is Richard Whitehouse. He is a talented silversmith who has many years of experience. He is a qualified Further Education Teacher. He was trained at the Vittoria Street School of Jewellery and Silversmithing in Birmingham. He has worked in both Birmingham and London, for Stuart Devlin. Who was for a while, the Queen's jeweller. He now has his workshop at the forge where he makes jewellery and silverware. You do not need any previous experience or tools for the course. These are some of the skills can will learn: Designing and making jewellery from scratch. Making larger items in Silver. Joining metals by soldering. Finding and setting your own semi precious stones and cabochons*. Using and understanding tools correctly. Learning about Chasing and Repoussé. Hammering and texturing techniques. Using fittings and findings (the small bits and pieces used in jewellery making such as clasps, hinges, clips etc.) If you are a more advanced student, You can start at a more advanced level. Each student will be taught at their own level without any feeling of pressure and will be able to work at their own pace. Classes may be mixed with beginners or more advanced students. Each student has their own jewellers bench. Basic tools and materials are provided free of charge. This does not include silver, gold and semi precious stones.
